Zurich Insurance (Hong Kong) has formed a partnership with YAS Insurance to introduce a new insurance program aimed at electric and hybrid taxi drivers in Hong Kong.

The collaboration leverages YAS’s AI-driven TAXY platform to monitor driving behaviour and reward safe practices, marking a step toward enhanced safety and operational standards within the city’s taxi sector.

Hong Kong initiative targets safer electric taxi operations

The new insurance offering is structured in three tiers, each linked to the driver’s safety performance as measured by the TAXY platform.

The technology utilises artificial intelligence to analyse driving patterns, drawing on data from in-vehicle cameras and a dedicated mobile application.

This system enables real-time tracking and integration with local traffic data, providing drivers with instant alerts and route optimization to avoid high-risk areas.

Drivers enrolled in the program are eligible for personal accident coverage, with additional benefits available for those who achieve higher safety scores.

These benefits can include protection for personal property and extended accident coverage for family members, depending on the tier reached.

The initiative is designed to encourage safer driving habits, with the intention of reducing accidents and improving overall road safety for passengers, pedestrians, and other motorists.

Over a six-month period, the TAXY platform has processed more than 39 million data points, including road conditions, weather, and driver behaviour. According to Zurich and YAS, this analysis has led to a measurable improvement in safety scores among participating drivers.

Eric Hui (pictured middle), CEO of Zurich Insurance (Greater China), commented that taxis play a vital role in keeping Hong Kong’s economy moving and linking different parts of the city.

“Our partnership with YAS Insurance is intended to support taxi drivers with protection that meets their needs while contributing to a more resilient transport system,” he said.

William Lee (pictured right), co-founder of YAS, reaffirms the company’s commitment to enhancing safety for taxi drivers and passengers in Hong Kong and elsewhere by utilising real-time data and risk analysis

“Partnering with Zurich allows us to raise service standards, improve fleet efficiency, and bring greater peace of mind on the roads. This program will keep evolving, with new incentives, rewards, and partnerships – from e-commerce to electric charging – to strengthen the entire taxi ecosystem and set the stage for wider adoption,” he said.

Zurich Malaysia launches EV insurance and charging infrastructure collaboration

In Malaysia, Zurich Malaysia has introduced Z-Driver EV Protect, a new insurance and takaful product designed specifically for electric vehicle owners.

This solution extends coverage beyond conventional motor insurance to address EV-specific risks, such as battery protection, home charging equipment, and portable charging accessories.

The package offers optional coverage for home chargers up to RM15,000, portable cables up to RM2,000, and personal liability during charging up to RM50,000. Additional features include a compassionate allowance for incidents at public charging stations and optional protection for battery damage due to water ingress.

The product is available as an add-on, with premiums starting at RM120.

Zurich Malaysia’s new offering complements its existing Z-Driver benefits, such as unlimited towing for battery depletion.

The insurer has also announced a partnership with Gentari Green Mobility Sdn Bhd to support the expansion of Malaysia’s EV charging infrastructure.

Zurich’s branding will be present at 13 charging stations in prominent locations, including Suria KLCC, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, and KLIA2 Gateway.
