Michigan businesses now have access to a new suite of commercial insurance products from Rockford Mutual Insurance Company (RMIC), including businessowners’ policies, commercial package policies, and commercial umbrella coverage. Commercial auto coverage is expected to follow in the coming months.

The company officially launched these products in the state on August 18, marking a significant expansion outside of its long-established Midwest footprint.

The new commercial product rollout is designed to help businesses safeguard against a wide range of risks, including property damage, legal liability, catastrophic claims, and other operational exposures. Coverage can be tailored to specific industries and business models, offering flexibility for both small and mid-sized enterprises.

“Entering Michigan’s commercial insurance market is not just an opportunity for business; it is an invitation to collaborate, evolve, and set new benchmarks together for the benefit of the communities we serve,” said Robert Jacobson, president and CEO of RMIC.

A long-standing Midwest insurer with community roots

Founded in 1896, Rockford Mutual Insurance Company has been part of the Midwest insurance landscape for more than a century. Headquartered in Rockford, Illinois, the company originally started as a fire insurance mutual before gradually expanding into other lines of business. Today, RMIC primarily writes automobile, homeowners’, farmowners’, and commercial multi-peril policies across Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana.

RMIC distributes its products exclusively through a network of independent agents, emphasizing strong community ties and personal service. The company consistently scores highly on customer loyalty, reporting a 97% satisfaction rating across its existing policyholder base. Its longevity and focus on relationship-driven distribution have helped it build a reputation as a stable, regional carrier with deep roots in local markets.

Why Michigan, and why now?

The move into Michigan reflects both a strategic growth initiative and an effort to meet rising demand for specialized, locally accessible insurance products. Michigan’s diverse economy - spanning manufacturing, healthcare, technology, and agriculture - creates opportunities for tailored coverage solutions, especially for small and mid-sized businesses seeking alternatives to national carriers.

RMIC’s emphasis on independent agents could also resonate in Michigan, where many businesses prefer working with local advisors who understand regional market dynamics. By pairing that distribution model with comprehensive commercial products, the company aims to carve out a niche in a competitive landscape dominated by larger national insurers.

Looking ahead

With its Michigan debut, Rockford Mutual is positioning itself as both a competitor and collaborator in the state’s commercial insurance market. By leaning on its 125+ years of experience and a strong agent-driven network, the company is betting that its personalized approach and flexible product suite will appeal to businesses seeking reliability and choice in their insurance partners.

Michigan businesses can now access a combination of property, liability, and umbrella coverage, supported by RMIC’s established claims service and customer care model.
