About NFU Mutual
The National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society Limited (NFU Mutual) offers a broad range of insurance products and financial services, which are divided into four segments: insurance, farming, business, and financial planning. It operates its general insurance business through a network of tied agents in rural areas throughout the UK.

NFU Mutual’s main insurance products include home, landlord, motor, equine, and bespoke home insurance. Its farming products and services include farming insurance, tractor insurance, union advantage, directors’ and officers’ liability insurance, farm safety & risk management, risk management services for farms, farming diversification, smallholder, and fighting the rise of countryside crime.

The group’s business segment offers business insurance, commercial vehicle insurance, business protection, business liability, and risk management services. Meanwhile, its financial planning segment focuses on investments, pensions, life cover and protection, inheritance tax planning, financial advice, and a fund centre.

History of NFU Mutual
NFU Mutual was founded in 1910 to support farmers in the newly established farming union through cost price insurance. Since then, the group has tapped into various markets – including business, vehicle, home, and equine insurance, as well as risk management, pensions, and investments.

In 2018, NFU Mutual entered a partnership with law firm DWF LLP. As part of the partnership, the law firm started providing NFU Mutual with legal services and support across its general insurance claims operations in the UK.

In 2020, NFU Mutual launched a £32 million COVID-19 support package, which included £24 million worth of insurance changes for additional coverage across a wide range of policies and to speed up claims. The group also expanded its use of Guidewire Software to improve service support.

Leadership at NFU Mutual

Nick Turner – Group CEO
Nick Turner was named group chief executive officer at NFU Mutual in 2021. Prior to this, he was the company’s sales and agency director and was appointed to the board in 2013. He joined the NFU Mutual from AXA where he served as managing director of intermediary and partnerships.

Turner boasts almost four decades of experience in general insurance, wealth management, and life assurance. He is a former president of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) and the Personal Finance Society.

Culture at NFU Mutual

NFU Mutual established the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust in 1998 to support and promote UK charities in the insurance, agriculture, and rural development sectors. It focuses on research, education, social welfare, and poverty relief.

Over the last 10 years, the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust has donated nearly £3 million to charities and local communities to support education and other social welfare initiatives. The group’s Farming Help initiative also helps families with farms to manage financial challenges through affordable housing, pastoral care, business advice, short- or long-term grants, and training to develop their skills.

The group’s young farmers’ clubs provide educational, social, and developmental opportunities to 10- to 26-year-olds from rural communities. Meanwhile, NFU Mutual’s Farms for City Children offers young people the chance to live and work on a farm for a week.

In 2020, the group donated a total of £739,000 to various UK organisations to help families to manage financial challenges and encourage physical and mental wellbeing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Some organisations that benefitted from the donation included The Farming Community Network, Forage Aid, The Addington Fund, The Prince’s Countryside Fund, Rural Support and Samaritans, The Royal Scottish Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RSABI), The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI), and the National Emergencies Trust: Coronavirus Appeal.
